The project keeps expanding its geographical span. To date, Ukrainians in 37 communities in five oblasts have accessed the aid from the organisation.
Metinvest Group, in concert with the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation, launched the Saving Lives humanitarian project very quickly at the beginning of the all-out war, because residents in the areas of the company's operations needed help. The project has quickly earned trust of the international community, which helped it increase the scale of aid. More than 220,000 Ukrainians have already accessed the aid. This makes Saving Lives one of the largest initiatives in Ukraine to support victims of Russian aggression.
The geography of aid is also growing. From the first days of the war until today, Ukrainians in
37 communities in Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Kirovohrad, and Zaporizhia oblasts have received food, hygiene kits, essentials, medicines, equipment, and consumables.
It is not only the areas where Metinvest operates, but also amalgamated communities where logistics is tough. Rural areas are mostly inhabited by elderly people or families with small children, who often cannot take care of themselves because of the lack of their own transport vehicles and the hostilities. Therefore, the support they get from Saving Lives is vital.
SCOPE OF AID
The number of beneficiary communities: 22 in Donetsk Oblast, 8 in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, 4 in Kherson Oblast, 2 in Kirovohrad Oblast, and 1 in Zaporizhia Oblast.
The initiative covers the biggest number of communities in Donetsk region, one of the hottest spots in Ukraine now. Despite calls from the government authorities to evacuate, many residents still remain in their homes and need help. In particular, Avdiivka Coke employees continue to deliver food packages, water, and medicines directly to the shelters where Avdiivka residents are forced to hide.
The aid reaches the communities beyond the areas where Metinvest operates. In particular, Kostiantynivka received 5,000 food kits; Dobropillia, 4,121; Selydove, 2,550; Druzhkivka, 1,697 (all in Donetsk Oblast) in August. In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, the project sent almost 4,500 packages to the residents of Zelenodolsk and Apostolove communities. Located very close to the front line, Zelenodolsk and Apostolove villages are often subjected to shelling, so food aid is of great importance.
CONTENTS OF THE PACKAGES
Food packages include cereals, pasta, canned food, condensed milk, oil, sugar, and flour. The contents meet the nutritional intake recommendations of the World Health Organisation.
Traditionally, Saving Lives supports regions hosting a large number of the displaced persons. In particular, they are Kryvyi Rih and six other communities close to a distribution hub deployed on the site of Central Ore Mining and Processing Works: Karpivka, Shyroke, Novolativka, Lozuvata, Hleiuvatka, and Petrivka.
Residents of Metinvest shelters are among the beneficiaries of the Saving Lives project in Zaporizhia.
In addition, the initiative sends humanitarian convoys to the liberated areas. Residents of Kochubeivka community received 2,000 survival kits in June. The community includes 14 villages of Beryslav Raion, Kherson Oblast. All of them were occupied by the Russian invaders in March. People had to live without electricity and experienced water problems for about a month. Later, the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated these territories, but they remain in danger. Metinvest and its partners provide humanitarian assistance to support people at these difficult times.
